The ZEITGEIST (spirit of the age or spirit of the time) is the intellectual fashion or dominant school of thought that typifies and influences the culture of a particular period in time.
It’s a german word.
I wanted to finish the A to Z blog challenge with a word that would express something intangible, impermanent, but which defines many of the things, we assume define us.
When you think of the 60’s there is a spirit, a flavor that you can explain by giving example of what touched you or triggered your imagination. At the same time, that thing will most likely be something on which everyone would agree that it’s a part of the Zeitgeist of that period, even if we all give a different example.
We will never really know what is part of the zeitgeist of a period before it ends. We may have clues, but while we are living it, we don’t have the distance to really appreciate the changes and transformations of paradigm that are occurring during that time, even if some things come and go by so quickly because of their impermanent nature.
